What We Smokin'
Neverywhere is on a mission to elevate music consisting of multitudes, not tied to the constraints of genre.
When the top 1% percent of music hoards more and more resources in a music economy that centers around the poptimist middle, the industry powerbrokers neglect the people shaping and defining genre, evolution, and musical innovation. Genre-defying artists are asked to engineer their own popularity before they receive any real support. Originality loses out in the open algo, where artists and listeners are siloed in isolated worlds. Passivity is nurtured, consumption becomes defined by arbitrary metrics, and fans seeking novelty are left asking, “How did you find that?”
Boiler Room and Tiny Desk, once the arbiters of taste, now only highlight the biggest artists. This leaves a hole in the industry—a need for a series that celebrates up-and-coming acts. This is where Neverywhere comes in. Where other platforms optimize for pop, we optimize for niche. Where others focus on genre, we focus on ethos. Where others cater to the over served, we invest in acts that we believe in despite all else. Thereby creating a new opportunity—and hopefully a more artist-centric music industry—for the artists themselves, and for us, the fans.
It is a series where we invite fans and music nerds together into our loft for taped live concerts and interviews of pioneering musicians. Through Neverywhere, artists will build out their content portfolios through high quality content, made in house with the artist's vision in mind. We help musicians show up in the world, breaking free from the constraints of the traditional music industry. Big things start in little rooms. And while our loft is certainly is not a little room by New York standards, it is tiny for what we know the musicians who enter Neverywhere will go onto achieve.
